Is Edinburgh worth a visit?<\/h2>\n\n

Yes, definitely yes, Edinburgh is well worth a visit! We loved its unique atmosphere, a blend of history and modernity<\/strong>. Like us, you’ll discover its iconic castle, its mysteries and legends, its breathtaking panoramic views, its free museums, its traditional pubs and its magnificent gardens. You’ll also be fascinated by its rich literary heritage<\/strong>, right down to the places that inspired the Harry Potter<\/strong> saga. <\/p>\n\n

Reason 1 – For its emblematic castle perched on a volcano<\/h2>\n\n

The dark, massive silhouette of Edinburgh Castle<\/strong> towers majestically over the city from Castle Rock, an ancient extinct volcano. We enjoyed exploring this site, which bears witness to centuries of Scottish history. The castle, which has been militarily active since the Iron Age, houses the Crown Jewels<\/strong> and the impressive Great<\/em> Hall. <\/p>\n\n

Reason 2 – For the medieval atmosphere of the Royal Mile<\/h2>\n\n

The Royal Mile is the main thoroughfare of the Old Town. It stretches 1.6 km (1 mile) from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House<\/strong>. We loved strolling along the Royal Mile. It’s full of surprises: unusual museums, narrow alleyways known as closes<\/em>, pubs, restaurants and hidden gardens. <\/p>\n\n

The medieval buildings that line it, with their distinctive stepped gables<\/strong>, bear witness to the city’s vertical expansion in the 16th century, when buildings reached up to 12 storeys<\/strong> high. You’ll discover landmarks such as St. Giles Cahedral<\/strong> and John Knox<\/strong> ‘s house, and gain a fascinating insight into Edinburgh’s social, religious and cultural life. <\/p>\n\n

Edinburgh’s underground vaults<\/em> were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are full of astonishing stories. We explored these mysterious passages during our visit to Mary King’s Close<\/strong>. They were once used as homes and shops for the poorest of the poor. <\/p>\n\n

You can only visit the catacombs with a guide, who will tell you about the legend of Annie<\/strong>, a little girl whose ghost still haunts Mary King’s Close.
