Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, Edinburgh Castle is well worth a visit. Located at the top of <strong>Castle Rock<\/strong>, it dominates the entire city. Its impressive architecture and numerous areas to explore fully justify spending some time there. Today, it houses a number of iconic landmarks: the <strong>Scottish Crown Jewels<\/strong>, the Stone of Destiny, the famous <strong>Mons Meg<\/strong> cannon, the One O&#8217;Clock Gun firing range and <strong>St. Margaret&#8217;s Chapel<\/strong>, Edinburgh&#8217;s oldest building. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-bsnFfTm\/0\/K52wzckqrcpD8NtPQmVJwgd55HDZV4n4CcspZ4Bwm\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8290-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our favorite moments<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We particularly appreciated it:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Panoramic views from the ramparts<\/strong>: throughout the visit, we took time to admire the scenery. From the different levels, the panoramas are superb: views of Edinburgh&#8217;s rooftops, Princes Street gardens and the Firth of Forth in the distance. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The atmosphere of Hospital Square<\/strong>: a real break in the tour. The equestrian statue of Earl Haig is a reminder of the site&#8217;s military history. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The elegance of the Great Hall<\/strong>: one of the finest interior spaces in the castle. The wooden framework is remarkable, and the walls decorated with antique weapons create a spectacular ambience. It played a key role in Scotland&#8217;s wars of independence. It played a <strong>key role<\/strong> in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The royal family stayed here until the 16th century. It was then used as a <strong>garrison and prison<\/strong>. We advise you to come <strong>as soon as it opens or at the end of the day<\/strong>. The cannon shot at 1 p.m. attracts a lot of people, but it&#8217;s well worth the detour if you like tradition.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-FV97TW2\/0\/MMKRCTDQFWMCCqkzM6jpwn3psFfN9hppZpBgwXK5J\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8364-L.jpg\" alt=\"Crown Square\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Length of visit and main difficulties<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow <strong>2 to 3 hours<\/strong> to explore the entire site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of the climbs are steep, and several areas feature <strong>irregular<\/strong> <strong>steps<\/strong> and <strong>cobblestones<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An accessibility card is available for visitors with reduced mobility. We found it very pleasant to follow the natural ascent to Crown Square. As we climbed, the view of the city gradually opened up. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-sLJq2JR\/0\/LBD7pKB8HWK8W7pj3z7bpCtvqSZ8NWPnZChwTcRvR\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8287-L.jpg\" alt=\"Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Johnston Terrace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Crossing the Gatehouse and Portcullis<\/strong> Gate<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entrance is via the Gatehouse, an imposing defensive structure marking the main entrance. Then climb to the right to <strong>Portcullis Gate<\/strong>, an ancient drawbridge with a portcullis and thick walls. It was clear that we were entering a <strong>fortress<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-c4NqnkB\/0\/LstX6kds523rg6Jvr7NSLJhsbMmhPwVxz29JvJ7CT\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8293-L.jpg\" alt=\"Portcullis Gate, Edinburgh Castle\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Portcullis Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Admire the cannons of Mill&#8217;s Mount Battery<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just beyond the gate, you come to a <strong>vast esplanade<\/strong> where we found the lined-up cannons of Mill&#8217;s Mount. But it was the view over the city that caught our eye. It&#8217;s already spectacular.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-ZQBPDSz\/0\/M3jxZ85QZbvGH8Xxfd9MqWXHvkZsfktBd3pTPWXNR\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8298-L.jpg\" alt=\"view from Mill's Mount\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Explore the lower level: esplanade, museum and ramparts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Panoramic break on the esplanade<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Mill&#8217;s Mount, we stayed a while to admire the view from the open esplanade over the <strong>city&#8217;s rooftops<\/strong>. The <strong>Redcoat Cafe<\/strong> is also a great place to grab a bite to eat or a drink before continuing up the hill. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-FDQpzjL\/0\/K7qDgcqW9H2Q9vdBS4mNrtQ4bk3nMq7DrpncrQPrK\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8300-L.jpg\" alt=\"view from Mill's Mount\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Earl Haig&#8217;s equestrian statue in Hospital Square<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing on, on our right, we discovered a square square marked by the equestrian statue of Earl Haig, a Scottish military figure of the First World War. Hospital Square provides another real sense of space in the heart of the ramparts. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-4LKnkKx\/0\/NJL8fZ844t5S3rxVwsbjMdNLQqjDjSQMjPqRfctTd\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8304-L.jpg\" alt=\"Hospital Square\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hospital Square<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climb up to Foog&#8217;s Gate and the upper ramparts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path then climbs gently to Foog&#8217;s Gate. This <strong>fortified passage<\/strong> marks the entrance to the upper level of the site. On the way up, we again <strong>enjoyed lovely views<\/strong> of the walls and surrounding landscape. The atmosphere becomes more historic and solemn.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-SGNr4BH\/0\/M9SNfrKT7VqMhqKMvGRsjtMhsDCKBfPbh7dMMDhdN\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8311-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Discover the upper level: cannons, chapel and historic buildings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The legendary Mons Meg and its fortifications<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After passing through Foog&#8217;s Gate, we soon came across <strong>Mons Meg<\/strong>, one of Europe&#8217;s most famous medieval cannons. Its massive size always impresses visitors. Around it, the ramparts offer <strong>spectacular views<\/strong> over the town and the Forth estuary.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-JH5s96h\/0\/MHV6T2PwpQ82gNMnFFBNhMcR4mCnmrnfC8QnNDr92\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8322-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mons Meg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>St Margaret&#8217;s Chapel, the oldest building on the site<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little further on, we discovered the small 12th-century <strong>Sainte-Marguerite chapel<\/strong>. It&#8217;s the oldest building on the site. Its simple architecture and thick walls create an intimate atmosphere, in contrast to the other, more imposing buildings. And above it, an ever more breathtaking view.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-mBbdhPQ\/0\/L5shBWWMRBH8bxqVMMcM67JDfk2XjpJssB48HzXB6\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8330-L.jpg\" alt=\"view from St Margaret's Chapel\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Scottish National War Museum<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearby, you&#8217;ll find the Scottish National War Museum. It traces Scotland&#8217;s military history through a fine <strong>collection of objects<\/strong>: uniforms, weapons, paintings and battle stories. The visit is quick but interesting, even for non-specialists.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-JNgVvbz\/0\/NHr4HR75VNs9TMkNvd3fQRKPWHDmWQRQPh2cGNJ2S\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8332-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treasures of the former royal palace: Honours, Royal Apartments and Great Hall<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We finally emerged into Crown Square and entered the most prestigious spaces.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Honours of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny<\/strong><br\/>We began by discovering the jewels of the Scottish crown: crown, sceptre and ceremonial sword. The famous Stone of Destiny, used at royal coronations, is on display in the same room. The staging is sober and highlights these national symbols.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Edinburgh-castle\/i-pz275F9\/0\/LmFvDZ9GLQf3bSn6wFSxscs9BF5B92fJsxvcG973G\/L\/Edinburgh_castle_Edinburgh_Edinburgh_Scotland_IMG_8337-L.jpg\" alt=\"honours of Scotland\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The royal apartments<\/strong><br\/>The tour continues through the former <strong>apartments of the royal family<\/strong>. The rooms are simply furnished, but allow visitors to imagine life at the ch\u00e2teau.
