The museum is housed in <strong>two separate buildings<\/strong> in a peaceful setting away from the city center. <\/p>\n\n<p>Between <strong>iconic 20th-century works<\/strong> and engaging <strong>contemporary exhibitions<\/strong>, we explored these two venues with their complementary atmospheres. Each offered a unique visitor experience. <\/p>\n\n<p>In this article, you&#8217;ll find some <strong>useful tips<\/strong> to help you prepare for your visit and have a wonderful time!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scotland-lovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/visiter-scottish-national-gallery-modern-art-edimbourg-3.jpg\" alt=\"visit the scottish national gallery modern art in Edinburgh\" class=\"wp-image-1181\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This opinion is completely <strong>independent<\/strong>, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is the museum worth it? Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>Yes, the <strong>Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art<\/strong> is well worth a visit. We really enjoyed this artistic stopover in Edinburgh, for several reasons: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The gallery is spread over two buildings<em>(Modern One<\/em> and <em>Modern Two<\/em>), in a <strong>green setting<\/strong> far from the hustle and bustle of the city center.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The visit invites contemplation and reflection, between <strong>great names in modern art<\/strong> and <strong>committed contemporary creations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Temporary exhibitions<\/strong> are often immersive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrating art into outdoor spaces<\/strong> adds to the pleasure of discovery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>For those of us who appreciate modern art, this is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/scotland-lovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-edinburgh-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best things to do in Edinburgh<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-PjjbRfb\/0\/KRP2FFB93GVqq6Ht9RprDmjr6xmg7m5dVb5Bxvm8c\/L\/do-ho-suh-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Exhibitions, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is renowned for its collections, which include works by <strong>Picasso<\/strong>, <strong>Pollock<\/strong>, <strong>Klee<\/strong>, <strong>Beuys<\/strong> and others. It also plays a central role in Scotland&#8217;s art scene, hosting <strong>bold<\/strong> and committed <strong>temporary exhibitions<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p>It is also distinguished by its garden and outdoor installations, such as the <strong><em> Landform<\/em> sculpture<\/strong>, a work by architect and landscape theorist <strong>Charles Jencks<\/strong>. Created in 2001, this undulating installation of lawn and water basins embodies a sculptural approach to landscape inspired by science, geometry and cosmology. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-KMWr9bf\/0\/MCPbCqDn6j9QQF794gG3WnGrtJ7LMpF5XzP7J2x5h\/L\/landform-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-L.jpg\" alt=\"Landscape sculpture Landform by Charles Jencks, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Landform<\/em> landscape sculpture by Charles Jencks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our favorite moments<\/h3>\n\n<p>In addition to works by some of the greatest masters of modern and contemporary art, we also enjoyed..:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The contrast between the neoclassical architecture of the buildings and their contemporary layout<\/strong>. Both buildings retain their historic charm, while offering uncluttered, luminous and well-staged spaces. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The temporary exhibitions<\/strong> were great moments of discovery. During our visit, we were able to see the textile and architectural universe of South Korean artist Do Ho Suh, followed by engaged works in the <em>Women in Revolt!<\/em> exhibition. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The sculptural gardens<\/strong> on the banks of the <strong>Water of Leith<\/strong> extend the outdoor visit. It is housed in a <strong>former 19th-century orphanage<\/strong>, now known as <em>Modern One<\/em>. In 1999, a former administration building, <em>Modern Two<\/em>, located opposite, was integrated to accommodate more contemporary works. Traffic can be heavy at rush hour, however, and museum signage is rather unobtrusive. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" found a paid parking lot, open from 9.45am to 5.30pm, close to each building.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parking is \u00a35 for up to 4 hours<\/strong>, and <strong>\u00a39 for 4 to 8 hours<\/strong>.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is not possible to stay longer than 8 hours or to park overnight.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Places can fill up quickly during busy periods, so we recommend arriving visit <\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While <strong>fine weather<\/strong> allows you to take full advantage of the gardens and outdoor facilities, the museum is a pleasure to visit every day, even on <strong>rainy days<\/strong>!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On weekdays, the atmosphere is quieter <strong>in the morning or early afternoon<\/strong>, ideal for strolling between the works.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note that temporary exhibitions can be <strong>very busy at weekends<\/strong>, especially when they open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" <strong>a good 2 hours<\/strong> to visit the 2 museums without dragging your feet. <br\/>We advise you to allow half a day to enjoy the gardens and why not have a meal or a cup of tea.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" to visit<\/h3>\n\n<p>On the day scheduled for our visit, we were only able to visit <em>Modern One<\/em><em>(Modern Two<\/em> was closed for the installation of a new exhibition). We started with the first floor, where we saw a<strong>temporary exhibition<\/strong> by South Korean artist Do-Ho-Suh, before moving upstairs to the <strong>permanent collections<\/strong>. Here we saw works by some of the greatest names in modern and contemporary art, as well as works by Scottish artists.  <\/p>\n\n<p>We took advantage of our few days in Edinburgh to return to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and visit <em>Modern Two<\/em> for the opening of the exhibition <em>Women in Revolt!<\/em> This allowed us to appreciate the gallery&#8217;s committed vocation Two<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern One: modern art and a walk in a green park<\/h2>\n\n<p>While we loved the building&#8217;s exterior setting, its architecture and gardens, we were also seduced by the richness and diversity of the works it houses.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immersive arrival between sculpture and classical architecture<\/h3>\n\n<p>Even before you step through the doors, art invites itself into the landscape with <em>Landform<\/em>, a large-scale landscape installation by Charles Jencks. British artist Martin Creed&#8217;s message <em>&#8220;Everything is going to be alright&#8221;<\/em> is also displayed in white neon letters. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-pqKbwmQ\/0\/L9dZQRgZsHB38tgJkHKkKH4z3NZ7dgVrttRjVJBD4\/L\/modern-one-entrance-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-L.jpg\" alt=\"Entr&#xE9;e Modern One, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The building itself, a former orphanage in neoclassical style, offers an interesting contrast between its historic past and the modernity of its contents.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-FMr47TJ\/0\/LqJjGpwSh929fdxQKJDDbkgcsw9RQhwxtCGvjKPMP\/L\/modern-one-edinburgh-building-L.jpg\" alt=\"Modern One, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immersive temporary exhibition on the first floor<\/h3>\n\n<p>At the time of our visit, the first floor was hosting an exhibition devoted to South Korean artist <strong>Do-Ho-Suh<\/strong>. The ensemble of works explored notions of memory, identity and displacement through light materials, mainly translucent threads and fabrics. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-z7kcq3J\/0\/L9WWx8dm7xsdvHjmwPGQbsmS27fckt4xQFpRvmWh4\/L\/do-ho-suh-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-L.jpg\" alt=\"Modern One exhibition, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Among them, a life-size architectural installation invited visitors to walk through corridors and rooms recreated in textiles, playing on transparency and superimpositions. The exhibition&#8217;s atmosphere was intimate, poetic and deeply sensory. Extremely delicate.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-rLWMn8V\/0\/K6R3ZDF3HPwnH9NKv3gbf5kbmXHzFbZ473vXD8NJD\/L\/do-ho-suh-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Modern One installation, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20th-century masterpieces upstairs<\/h3>\n\n<p>Upstairs, the permanent collection features major works of twentieth-century art. Works by Picasso, Morandi, Pollock, Paul Klee, Munch and Beuys are displayed in a clear, airy layout.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-nf32nMC\/0\/KX84HLKghpJdf8ppMMLQDbJT7cBvWZmt3PBhrxDrb\/L\/modern-one-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-L.jpg\" alt=\"Permanent collections, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The tour, organized so as to create a dialogue between styles and eras, allows visitors to grasp the evolution of artistic forms, between figuration, abstraction and more conceptual experimentation.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-shL2HgR\/0\/LVb6dmZP4L8FwfP8qR8jWScSQZQgkhC2pgDMc3Bg3\/L\/modern-one-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"installation, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modern Two: Bold exhibitions and a more confidential atmosphere<\/h2>\n\n<p>On the other side of the garden, the <em>Modern Two<\/em> building offers a more intimate approach to contemporary art. It is home to projects that are often engaged, where the experience is built on a direct relationship with the works and ideas. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An exceptional venue for a committed approach<\/h3>\n\n<p><em>Modern Two<\/em> occupies a <strong>former administrative building<\/strong> transformed into a museum space in the late 1990s. As monumental as its neighbor, it offers a more subdued atmosphere, conducive to introspection. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-pj2j9jK\/0\/KtpfV5VddwLnkJJZFXGdp5NmSvtFnjK6GCnMLMNkS\/L\/modern-two-edinburgh-building-L.jpg\" alt=\"Modern Two, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Modern Two<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>This venue was designed to host more <strong>conceptual or political<\/strong> exhibitions, often linked to major social and cultural issues. We explore contemporary artistic approaches that question, challenge or tell a different story. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-tVZLKXT\/0\/NHxNSqFvPDJ9w8HnSwf7LHFWqbnfCZ7spdWvwML7W\/L\/modern-two-miracles-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-L.jpg\" alt=\"Garden installation, Modern Two, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contemporary projects and temporary exhibitions<\/h3>\n\n<p>At the time of our visit, the building was hosting a major group exhibition focusing on <strong>feminist activism in British art from the 1970s to the 1990s<\/strong>. The display, rich in archival documents, posters, videos and installations, traced the struggles waged by women artists against social norms and patriarchal structures. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Scottish-National-Gallery-of-Modern-Art\/i-fnkFRWn\/0\/KQdkFmG9MVMW985z4zSHqgzdWs8zKbqrKTQ5hnMG4\/L\/modern-two-women-gallery-modern-art-edinburgh-1-L.jpg\"
