We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit Arthur&#8217;s Seat?<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Arthur&#8217;s Seat worth it? Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p>The answer is yes, absolutely! In our opinion, Arthur&#8217;s Seat is an absolute <em>must-do<\/em> when visiting Edinburgh. This unique hike offers a true experience of Scottish nature. A taste of the <strong>Highlands<\/strong> in the heart of the city! The views are splendid, over the capital, Leith Harbour and the Firth of Forth. It&#8217;s one of <a href=\"https:\/\/scotland-lovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-edinburgh-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edinburgh&#8217;s best activities<\/a>!     <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Arthurs-Seat\/i-9zQsNpK\/0\/MjPhtggBd28KBcs6MTzLrmPxDNkSvTbvccKgVN42p\/L\/arthur-seat-edinburgh-top-L.jpg\" alt=\"Arthur's Seat - Is the site worth it?\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is Arthur&#8217;s Seat famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p>Arthur&#8217;s Seat is famous for its strategic location <strong>in the heart of the city<\/strong>. This extinct volcano overlooks Edinburgh, offering spectacular panoramic views of the capital and the <strong>Firth of Forth<\/strong>. It is also associated with <strong>many legends <\/strong>, one of which tells of a sleeping dragon that once terrorized the region.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Arthur&#8217;s Seat has <strong>inspired many writers<\/strong>. Among them <strong>Mary Shelley<\/strong> and her famous <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, as well as <strong>Jules Vernes<\/strong><em>(Les Indes Noires<\/em>) and, closer to home, <strong>Ian Rankin<\/strong> and his famous detective Inspector John Rebus. In 2011, the Netflix adaptation of <strong>David Nicholls<\/strong>&#8216; novel <em>One Day<\/em>, with Anne Hathaway in the title role, further enhanced the site&#8217;s reputation.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Arthurs-Seat\/i-J2WdG9X\/0\/LH6GJct3xNjJqPF96NNwBxXQtjkVRCs5PD2w2GvtL\/L\/arthur-seat-firth-view-L.jpg\" alt=\"Arthur's Seat - History and legends\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our favorite moments<\/h3>\n\n<p>During our hike, we were seduced by..:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spectacular views<\/strong> wherever we looked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>broom blossoms<\/strong> (we were there in May) that colored the landscape,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em><strong>lochs<\/strong><\/em> (lakes) that added a typically Scottish touch to the experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Scotland\/Edinburgh\/Arthurs-Seat\/i-nnP8Tj9\/0\/MRmTZ9mqjhGHwpHjR3hDGktR7hggXqpbXrQMgNX83\/L\/arthur-seat-broom-L.jpg\" alt=\"Arthur's Seat - Our favorite moments\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History in brief<\/h3>\n\n<p>Arthur&#8217;s Seat is an ancient extinct volcano, <strong>350 million years<\/strong> old. Inhabited since the Iron Age, it is shrouded in <strong>mystery<\/strong> and <strong>legend<\/strong>. Some associate its name with Arthurian legends, seeing it as a possible site of <strong>King Arthur<\/strong>&#8216;s exploits, or even the site of the mythical <strong>Camelot<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>During our visit, we discovered <strong>St Margaret&#8217;s Well<\/strong> and its legend: King <strong>David I<\/strong> of Scotland was hunting near the spring when he was attacked by a stag. A luminous cross appeared between the animal&#8217;s antlers, and it fled. You may be lucky enough to spot the kestrels, partridges and sparrows that populate this area. All along the main trail, we enjoyed a variety of viewpoints, perfect for taking <strong>a break<\/strong> and catching our breath. Beyond Edinburgh, we could see the <strong>North Sea<\/strong> on one side and as far as the <strong>Pentland Hills<\/strong> on the other. We came in the morning but were told that the sunsets were particularly magical and seemed to last an eternity.
